Ghana's flag, a landmark in African independence history — it was the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule in 1957, and its red-yellow-green-with-black-star design directly inspired the pan-African color scheme used across the continent. The black star, called the 'lodestar of African freedom,' also gives the national football team its nickname, the Black Stars.
