The peace symbol — a circle with three lines forming an inverted "trident" shape — originally designed in 1958 by British artist Gerald Holtom for the anti-nuclear movement, combining the semaphore letters N and D (Nuclear Disarmament). It was adopted by 1960s counterculture and remains shorthand today for anti-war sentiment, hippie aesthetics, or just general goodwill, largely detached from its nuclear-disarmament origin.
