The recycling symbol — three chasing arrows forming a triangle — used literally for environmental/sustainability content and casually to mean "reusing" an idea, outfit, or joke. Designed in 1970 by 23-year-old design student Gary Anderson for a contest sponsored by a paper company, it was never trademarked, which is a big part of why it spread globally as a free universal symbol.
